Fifteen-year-old Clary Fray has always thought herself as “normal”. However, when she starts seeing things, like demons and Shadowhunters, her mother is suddenly kidnapped. But what would demons want with a human family? Everyone wants to know, including the Shadowhunters.

I love books like this, however, it doesn’t really have that many things that make it special or different from all the other books. The author seems to borrow a lot of aspects from other things, with only a very little originality. Also, the dialogue doesn’t seem to be very realistic from the point of teenagers. The author uses a lot of works that I don’t think most teenagers would know. Anyways, the book seems kind of slow and boring because the author describes almost every event and character in detail, but I kind of like that. :)

Also, I don’t really like how she put so many anime and manga things in the book since it just makes it seem like a fanfiction than an actually story. :( Plus, you can see many manga character stereotypes in this book — like how Jace seems to be like, personality wise, characters in most of the manga I read (bad boy). The other characters seem to match a certain stereotype as well: the bad boy, the nerd, and the annoying, whiny girl. The only characters I really liked were Magnus and Alec, however, some readers might them or the book because they are gay characters. But that just makes me like them even more, since I love reading yaoi manga. ;)

Overall, the book is pretty average, so read at your own risk. I’m still going to read the rest of the series, as long as my library has them, because once I start a series, I really can’t stop myself from reading the rest.
