House of Night Book 01

3 out of 5

Zoey Redbird has always thought of herself as a normal teenage girl, that is, until she got Marked. Now she is a fledging vampyre, training to become an adult vampyre at the House of Night. She will soon discover that she has she has more special powers than the average fledging. So, when she sees the leader of the Dark Daughters is misusing her powers, Zoey starts planning ways on how to bring her down.

I started to re-read this series, but I’m starting to regret it. After I finish the two novellas and the new release, I’m most likely dropping this series. This book is still as boring and irritating, if not more, as I remember. :|

For this series, it starts out pretty good and interesting by letting us know about her life before she is Marked and then how people treat her after being Marked by the Tracker. However, she soon goes through all of the teenage problems and complaints about her family. Let’s just say that it definitely sounds like a teenager wrote it — whiny, irritating, and thinks the world revolves around them. *rolls eyes* It’s supposed to be a young adult supernatural, but it feels like high school meets supernatural — emphasis on the high school part. All of those parts were very boring and irritate the hell out of me, and I wish it was a little bit less high school.

Anyways, out of the characters, I love the side characters and hate the main one. Zoey’s personality is so irritating and a hypocrite that it was kind of hard to make it through the book. Especially how even though she’s new to being a vampyre, she uses the “I have more power than you” card. Urgh! :| Zoey’s personality is one reason why I will be dropping this series after I finish what has been released so far. Also, one of the characters is gay, for those who don’t like that kind of thing. And for the descriptions of the characters, the authors tend to use beauty, handsome, and good-looking. I don’t know where they got the idea that those words describe a character, but oh well. It does say that this book is beauty and handsome obsessed. The descriptions for events are all right, and the events in general (except the high school teenage whining) were kind of interesting. :) Oh, and there is also a lot of talking about sex, kissing, and things like that, so beware of that.

Overall, it was a pretty interesting read, if you can past the teenage whining and annoying main character. :| Also, it would have been rated a two star, if it weren’t for the new take on vampires and mythology. But I would recommend this to people looking for a new take on vampires, as long as you can get past the high school. ;) So for me, think of this as a very low three star. :S
