Mead, Richelle – Vampire Academy 0.5: Sunshine

2 out of 5

Eric Dragomir has a reputation of being a player, and he has no intention of settling down. That is, until he meets Rhea Daniels, will she be able to tame the player within Eric? This is a prequel of Vampire Academy. Story about Lissa’s (Vasilisa) parents and how they met.

First of all, I have never read the Vampire Academy series, but I have heard that the series is good. Now if I were to base whether or not I would read the series from this short story, I would say no and run away from it.

The plot of this short story was so dull that it shouldn’t be put into a book. Maybe a free read, but not a book you have to pay money for. That was my very first issue with this story.

The second thing I didn’t like in this short was the characters’ personalities. They were all so very annoying and irritating. Rhea was very weak and docile, and that irritated me so much I nearly threw the book at one point. And Eric’s personality wasn’t much better. His “never had loved anyone” and player personality was teeth gritting and annoyed me further. Sure, I have read other books with these types of personalities, but the author was able to make the characters appear appealing to me – this story didn’t.

There are several other things I didn’t like about this short story like it lacked events and details, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend buying this book just to have a Vampire Academy series story to read. Borrow it from your library or friend first before you buy it.

So far, I am recommending staying far, far away from this book, and this is based only on this one story.

Oh, well. Onto the next story, even though I’m kind of not looking forward to reading it. >.>”

Noel, Alyson – Bring Me to Life

4 out of 5

Danika wins a contest to go to Sunderland Manor Art Academy, which is located in the UK. Forgetting the life she leaves behind, she finds the manor creepy, yet familiar. Not only that, she meets Braum there. Is there more to this manor, servants, and guy than what meets the eye?

I kind of got a feeling, while reading it, that this story’s plot was a spin-off of Dracula, but I don’t know for sure since I tend to not to read that many classics. ^^;

While reading it, this story was sometimes a little hard to follow, or it was for me (maybe I was sleepy), but it is pretty much explained towards the end of the short story. However, you might still have some questions about the story, characters, etc.

The characters’ personalities were all right, but you couldn’t really categorize the personalities they had since they were pretty much had many personalities that were well blended.

Also, this story had good enough details and descriptions, but I wish this story were a little bit longer (about as a long a novel). :P So far, I think that this story is the best one in this book. Definitely very good read, but I want to know and read more about it.

It would be worth the money to buy this book, if all the stories were like this one. ;) Oh, well. Onto the next story, but I’m definitely not looking forward to reading it since it is by Kristin Cast. :(

Cast, Kristin – Above

1 out of 5

Sol is an Other (vampire) from Above, and Rheena is from Below. However, Rheena has never fit in Below, so her parents allow her to go live Above. Shen then meets Sol Above. They find that they have similar feelings for each other, but how long will it last?

One thing, what the hell is with this story?! The author tries (and fails) in writing it like a poem, and it shows ever so well that it was badly written. Not only that, but the plot is definitely confusing at first, but it turns into something… awful? Strange? All together horrible? Take your pick.

The author also tries to take a new approach at describing events, characters, etc, but I hardly noticed them because I was too busy figuring out what the point of the story. It finally dawned to me who wrote the House of Night series, during the beginning books, her mother. This story was too horrible to even see how she even manages to write anything good and worthwhile.

Also, it is sheer luck I was able to make a summary about this short story.  I really wanted to rip and burn the pages. Yes, I was that irritated with it. It may seem gruesome, if you can actually figure out what the author was trying to say, but I hardly noticed because of my headache. I would have give it a 0 star rating, but I don’t have one. :(

This was by far the worst story in this book. Run far away from this story, and stay away from it.

*BREATHES* On to the next story. If this one irritates me, I’m turning it back into the library today.

Armstrong, Kelley – Edison Group Experiments: Kat 2: Hunting Kat

4 out of 5

Kat, now a full vampire, is trying to get used to her instincts as a huntress. However, when she goes somewhere without Marguerite, she gets kidnapped by bounty hunters. During that time, she meets two boys, but are they there to help or hurt her?

After reading the free short story, I was hoping to see a little bit more information on everything, but it didn’t turn out that way.

Also, there is very little romance, but there isn’t so much to be really happy or excited about. I wish I could have seen more romance develop between Kat and one of the boys. (I’m not saying his name because it might spoil the short story a little. :P )

Anyways, the short story was still pretty good, but I think it would be better if the author did some full novels along with the short stories. The characters are still pretty interesting, like in the free short story, but I wish their personalities were a little bit more developed from the free short story I read.

I really do wish there was more to Kat’s part of the Edison Group Experiments, like the author does for Chloe and Maya (which I yet to read). This felt like a very short read, but this one is the other story I like in this book.

Well, onto the last story in this anthology. Wish me luck~

Block, Francesca Lia – Lilith

1 out of 5

Paul wishes to escape his reality full of people bullying and teasing him. And Lilith might have a way for him, but will he like the choice she will give him?

Disappointed, very disappointed. Meh, I guess I have to add more things to make it more like a review now. :(

Things I didn’t like is well, everything and anything. One, the plot reminded me of another supernatural book that I didn’t like that much – I don’t remember the title right at this moment. Two, this short story was too creepy and strange for me to really enjoy.

*SPOILER* It really reminded me about how depressed teenager commits suicide, but this story kind of adds a twist to it by adding supernatural characters to it. *END SPOILER* Also, the personality of Paul is so stereotypical for most other characters in his position.  And it is kind of hard to write characters like him and make them appealing to readers.

Anyways, overall, I was very disappointed in the story and the character’s personalities. I had trouble reading it because it was so bad. Now, it isn’t the worst story in this book, but it is still pretty bad.

Feelings about the Book Overall

Overall, this book is definitely not worth buying, much less reading. If you really want to read it, here is what I suggest (in order from what I like the most to what I liked the least):

  1. Noel, Alyson – Bring Me to Life
  2. Armstrong, Kelley – Edison Group Experiments: Kat 2: Hunting Kat
  3. Mead, Richelle – Vampire Academy 0.5: Sunshine
  4. Block, Francesca Lia – Lilith
  5. Cast, Kristin – Above

Only one or two stories are worth reading and paying for. The rest, I think they should be free reads or burned.

Edison Group Experiments Book ??
Kat Book 01

Review/Rating:

5 out of 5

Kat, unknowing to her, is a genetically modified vampire as one of the Edison Group experiments. Though, when Marguerite, a vampire, feels sorry for Kat, she helps her escape from the Edison Group. However, what will happen when they finally catch her?

A very short story. According to The Darkest Powers website, this story was originally published in The Eternal Kiss anthology. Kat’s story is then continued in the anthology Kisses from Hell, which I will try to read later on.

Not really long enough to give enough details or events, but the glimpse at the characters got me interested in Kat’s stories. :) Even though it doesn’t have that much details or events, it was still enjoyable to read. Like I said, this short story got me interested in reading the continuation in the anthology. ;)

2ND REVIEW. 1ST REVIEW IS HERE.

Chloe and the gang thinks they are safe now, but what will they do when some of the members betray them? Will they ever find anyone who they can really trust?

Like the other two books in this series, I’m re-reading this book in order to make a better review.

Anyways, comparing the plot, growth, and characters to the other books in this series, this one is a lot better. It has a lot more events descriptions, growth, suspense, and excitement. Also, the author seems to have answered all the questions you might have about Chloe’s part of the story, and it has a pretty good ending. Another thing I like is how Chloe is a lot less annoying than the first two books – you can actually see her becoming more brave and courageous. She’s not as wimpy and whiny as well. Also, it finally has something that the other two books didn’t, which made it a little bit sweeter than the other two books. What made it sweeter? *SPOILER* It was the romantic parts between Derek and Chloe at the end of the book. *END SPOILER*

Another thing I like about this book is that it ties in her other series, which is called Otherworld. However, I wish some of the characters in Otherworld would appear and has a some-what active part in this series, but the author said she won’t do that. Oh, well. It would be nice if she did, but it’s fine if she mentions it.

All in all, it is a great ending to Chloe’s story for this arc of the series. Go ahead and read it. :)

There are a couple of short stories that take place after The Reckoning, but I decided to give Chloe’s part of The Darkest Powers series a rest. I’ll read them when I want. :X

Also, this series, The Darkest Powers, is apparently separated by character. This is the last book in Chloe’s story, but it is not the last book in The Darkest Powers series. The next book in The Darkest Powers series is The Gathering, which begins Maya’s story.

When Chloe and Derek get off the bus and separate from Tori and Simon, what exactly happens with them? Read this short story and find out.

The plot of this short story is between Chapter 28 and Chapter 37 (around page 309) of The Awakening. However, I suggest reading the book first and then read this short story.

Unlike the other short stories, this one is good to have out of the books. Why? Because it doesn’t have the same depth or feeling as the second book, so it wouldn’t make sense to have in the book. Also, unlike the other short stories, this one narrated by Tori with a little narration by Simon. However, the difference in narration was not the reason why I didn’t like it that much. I didn’t like this short that much because it feels like the author skipped events and some details in order to make it shorter. There were plenty of descriptions, but I wish there were more details to the events of this short story.

Also, please note, this is a review of the free short story. It is no longer free online since it will be published in a book along with the Dangerous and Divided short stories. I have no idea if the previous free version is the same as the combined version or not.

There are also, I think, two more short stories. I’ll have to look it up. One should be in a book and the other is included in another combination e-book of short stories.

2ND REVIEW. 1ST REVIEW IS HERE.

Now on the run from the Lyle House, Tori, Derek, Simon, and Chloe, have to find Derek and Simon’s father, Kit, and his friend Andrew before they get caught again. However, as they try to escape from various new obstacles, they start discovering the truths behind the Lyle House and their powers.

Like the first book in the series, I’m re-reading and re-reviewing this book as well, so that I can make a better review for it. ^^

Anyways, comparing the plot and set-up of this book to this first one of the series, I like this book better. It had more descriptions, events, and other factors to keep you interested. Also, there are fewer plot holes since the author develops it more into a novel than an introductory one. The author kind of redeems the series by actually answering some of the questions, instead of having nothing but confusion and mystery like the first book did.

Also, the personalities of the characters seem a little bit better. At least, Chloe’s personality seems to be a lot better. She’s a little bit less pitiful and whiny than the first book, but not by much. The other characters still grab your attention more than the main character, but the change in Chloe’s personality makes it easier to pay attention to her narration.

This book makes it feel like the series is actually going somewhere with its more in-depth plot, change in the main female character’s personality, descriptions, and better and more complete ending. Anyways, it really is a better read than the first book, so go ahead and read this one.

Derek and Simon are separated from Rae and Chloe, but what kind of troubles do they have while separated from the girls? You’ll find out in this short story.

The plot basically belongs between books one and two of the series. It is between on Chapter 44 of The Summoning and Chapter 16 of The Awakening. Despite going into The Awakening, I would suggest reading this short story before you read The Awakening, so you won’t really forget anything.

Anyways, in my opinion, this short, or most of it anyways, should have been added to The Summoning in order to give it a little bit more depth. I like how Derek narrates this short story – it is way less annoying than having Chloe narrating the whole story. You also get a peek at Derek and Simon’s feelings towards Chloe, which makes this short story even more interesting than the first book. I just wish the author could have put this in the books – in order to make them have more depth and humor.

Also, please note, this is a review of the free short story. It is no longer free online since it will be published in a book along with the Dangerous and Disenchanted short stories. I have no idea if the previous free version is the same as the combined version or not.

2ND REVIEW. 1ST REVIEW IS HERE.

Chloe was a normal girl, that is, until she starts seeing dead people. After an incident at school, she is sent to Lyle House, a group home for troubled teens. However, there is more to this group home and teens than what meets the eye. Will Chloe and the rest of them figure it out before they are trapped there forever?

I re-read and re-reviewed this book because I didn’t do that good of job last time. ^^; I was hoping that I would like the book better this time around, but most of the time, I was all like, “Meh! Whatever, I want to finish this quickly.” So, I like it a lot less than the first time I read it. I mostly thought the book was average and could have something more added to it.

The plot is sort of interesting because you read about a necromancer, and there aren’t that many young adult (or adult) books about nercomancers. However, that point gets ruined because the main character, who narrates the whole series, reminds me of several other female leads who get thrown into a role they didn’t know they were and does nothing but be a baby about it. Now, if the main character was a little less blah, annoying, and whiny, I might have liked this book a little better. Also, the other characters attract my attention more than Chole does. It had some descriptions, but nothing that grabs my attention. The events were sort of too short and lack details.

Overall, it was a good plot, but the main female character needs a better (less whiny) personality. Not really a good start for this series.

Derek Souza is a werewolf. After his brothers are taken away, Simon Bae’s father takes him in. However, when Derek accidentally hurts someone, they have to go on the run again. Though, this time will be different when their Dad suddenly disappears. What will happen to them now?

Since I have already read the books in the Darkest Powers arc, I decided to re-read it along with the free online short stories. In the books, you really don’t get to know the thinking of the other characters, except for Chloe, so I’m grateful for these short stories. For a short story, it has a good amount of descriptions and growth. I also like how you get to know Derek and Simon better in this story than in the books/series. Also, these events happen before Chloe goes to Lyle House.

Though, overall, it is a good short story to get to know other characters and information that is never really explained in depth in the books. It was more interesting than the books/series.

Also, please note, this is a review of the free short story. It is no longer free online since it will be published in a book along with the Divided and Disenchanted short stories. I have no idea if the previous free version is the same as the combined version or not.

The gang thinks they have finally found someone who can help them remain hidden from the Edison Group. However, is everyone in the group really trustworthy? And will Chloe finally be able to show her true feelings toward Derek?

Okay, yet another supernatural book. I have one non-supernatural book, and I’m reading that one next, so be patient for it. ;)

This series, so far, has been every interesting in all the books, including this one — even though the novels are similar to everything else I have read in the Young Adult Supernatural genre. The one thing that gets better in this book than in the other two books in the Darkest Powers Chloe’s Story is that Chloe becomes a little less annoying. Why? She’s not as wimpy and whiny in this book, and she actually learns something without being too annoying.

This book goes into a little bit more detail about the Lyle House, Edison Group, and the other characters’ past, which makes it a little bit more interesting than the other two books. Also, it finally has something that the other two books didn’t, which made it a little bit sweeter than the other two books. What made it sweeter? It was the romantic parts between Derek and Chloe at the end of the book.

Another thing I like about this book is that it ties in her other series, which is called Otherworld. However, I wish some of the characters in Otherworld would appear and has a some-what active part in this series, but the author said she won’t do that. Oh, well. It would be nice if she did, but it’s fine if she mentions it.

All in all, it is a great ending to Chloe’s story for this series, but I wish there was a little bit more to it. Go ahead and read it.

Here is some more information about this series. There are a couple of short stories for this series, go to the author’s website for more information and to read them. For the book order, I suggest looking on the author’s website as well.

Also, this series, The Darkest Powers, is apparently separated by character. This is the last book in Chloe’s story, but it is not the last book in The Darkest Powers series. The next book in The Darkest Powers series is The Gathering, which begins Maya’s story.

I’ll read the short stories and create a review on them later on. I have other books to read right now, which are due in a week. :(

#Old_BlueBooks-3_5

After seeing ghosts at school, Chloe Saunders was sent to the Lyle House, run by an evil organization called the Edison Group, as a living science experiment. However she soon escapes the Edison Group, but how long will Chloe, Derek, Tori, and Simon be able to escape the clutches of this evil organization?

Supernatural book. Again. :P Okay, it’s been over a month since I’ve read this, so short to no review. :S

Like the first book in this series, the second book was pretty interesting, but Chloe still kind of pisses me off with her personality.

Also, the book goes into more detail than the first book did about the past of the Lyle House, but not much. I guess the author is still waiting until the next book to give more information of what happened in the past.

It’s a good book to pass time, but as a series it’s kind of like other supernatural books I have read in the young adult section. It’s better than the first book, but not by much. :S
